I guess I should qualify that (early morning for me... ;-) ) All *internet* email, regardless of how it starts out, ends up as an SMTP message. As mentioned there are certain proprietary mail systems such as exchange and group-wise, etc. which would never be SMTP based, but as soon as an email recipient outside of the system is specified, the message becomes SMTP...
