Somebody told me that hell is where everything
connects, but nothing communicates.
I have a wireless link to my ISP... or at least, I had one
until some recent rains pumped enough water into the
local trees that the link died.
So, I installed a larger antenna. A 24db gain Andrews
antenna. And now I am getting a nice signal according
to Netstumbler.
However, I can no longer get my FreeBSD box to
associate with the access point at my ISP. Ditto for my
Windows laptop.
The ISP has a Linksys WAP-11 with an amp on it and a
8.5db omni antenna.
Another client (right now there are two clients) has
another WAP-11 in access poing client mode. I set up
that client, and everything's great there. (Both WAP-
11's are the original ones, both are running the 1.4i.1
software.)
I've looked at the network name, the security, the wep
key. It all seems to be set right. I've played with the
preamble. No joy.
I've used both a Cabletron RoamAbout (the same as an
Orinoco Silver card), and a Cisco Aironet 340.
In desperation, I moved all my gear into my ISP's
server room. I was close enough I could spit on his
internal antenna. Still no joy. Both of the NICs will
connect to my own AP (a D-Link 1000), so I think the
NICs are OK.
If someone has any suggestions, I'd be delighted to
hear them.
Thanks,
Mike
