Getting a little off-topic here, but since elevators are wired with power and phone lines, this sounds like a good application for ethernet-over-power or -over-phone-wires to an AP on the elevator roof. Useful side effect: throw in a flat-panel display on the elevator wall and you've got instant news-and-advertising platform, with guaranteed viewership - I've seen the latter done at some newer office buildings. You could even customize the content based on the floors requested and directions, i.e. traffic reports on the way down, stock reports on the way up, competitive analysis on the way to marketing floors and union organizing ads if no executive floors are selected...
