Thanks, now I see what you're talking about.
I guess when I think of 802.11 repeaters, same-frequency
store-and-forward repeating comes to mind.
For example, the Cisco Aironet APs can act as repeaters, receiving and
storing packets, and then repeating them on the same frequency.

(Does anyone know if other manufacturer's APs can do store-and-forward,
same-frequency repeating?)

The approach you describe is nice if you need the throughput of course,
and it's one I've used for multi-hop bridging links.  
Same-frequency repeating cuts the throughput in half since each packet
is sent twice on the same frequency, but uses half the hardware.
So if I don't need the full bandwidth of an 802.11 link--if the ultimate
destination is a 300-kbps DSL line, for example--or if I'm trying to
keep costs down, then I use the same-frequency repeater approach.
