It appears my registrar (directNIC) f'd up and my .org domain is not 
listed in the root servers. I didn't notice because I run my own 
nameservers, which I also use for client resolution.

The alias http://www.wificoop.net/ however,  does work.

Thanks to all for the various web site links and opinions.

I definitely don't want to step on or disregard the fine work people are 
doing in the free network arena.
