Title: Access Point Distances, antennas, please help!

I hate to be boring - but I'm looking for basic information on how far the various access points broadcast (the power output rating perhaps) - and possibly how various antennas can help.  You see, I'm rather feeble and know NOTHING about dbi and such!

I'm not talking about long distance bridging, or bridging at all.  Just standard internal use at home or in the office.  I have purchased 4 different AP's, and have generally been disgusted with all of them, distance wise.

I have multiple access points in my house - and really only have half of it covered - which I find... silly.  I have used a variety of wireless cards, laptops etc as well - and I'm frustrated at the lack of basic information on how to get decent range out of this equipment.

Are there any websites, etc. with this kind of info?  Does anyone have any recommendations on equipment to use?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

P.S. I've been on this list for at least 6 months (a year?) and rarely ever seen solid recommendations - but below are some of the comments that have been made - but are greek to me.

Regarding antennas:
"There are a bunch, and (though they might be pricier) CDW carries many of them.  The one I was looking at was an 8.5 dbi patch, from Proxim, CDW part number 7024-05.  It's about a bill and a half."

"Linksys is now selling an Amplifier which piggiebacks on the Unit you have. Add an 8dbi omni and you should do better."

BTW, I have this amplifier.  How do I know whether to get an 8dbi omni?
