Out of the box I think 50 m is about the max you can expect, and if there's walls (like in a home) much less. Metal is the big problem, maybe you have metal in your walls.

I remember apple had a guide to setting up "airport" in your home on their site ... probably still there somewhere (maybe int he support section)
