If you are trying to communicate with a large, relatively flat area then
an omni with high gain (8 dBi or greater) will suit you. So if you have a
single story for your access point the omni will do well. If you are
trying to communicate in a more 3d sphere, then a high gain omni will hurt
communication above and below you. In this case, you can either get an
amplifier, or a separate access point for each floor.

High gain omnidirectional antennas are available from a number of sources.
http://www.aerialix.com has 8 dBi and 12 dBi antennas (and cables) that
may suit your needs.
