Do you have any numbers on absorption? How about propagation speed. Could a
cloud of humid air surrounding a tree act as a microwave lens and refract
the beam away from the line-of-sight. This would be analogous to the
twinkling of star light due to atmospheric disturbances.

Don't know about heat, however humidity could have an
effect.
