I found out from experimenting that cantennas are polarized. The BARWN
antenna is probably polarized, too. That will cause signal strength to
rise and fall as you rotate the antenna. The effect *is* very significant.

-43dBm is excellent signal strength, but the BARWN node might not receive
your transmissions anywhere near as strongly. Maybe your antenna is not
strong enough? Also, consider that if your cantenna is not "matched" to
your radio, then the radio energy could be reflected back into your radio.
That will affect your connection prospects. It might also over-heat
the amp in your radio and break it. Maybe somebody will elaborate,
who understands impedance matching better than I.

Have you considered buying a patch or dish from netgate.com,
netnimble.net, or demarctech.com? I feel a lot more confident that their
antennas work right. Now my cantennas gather dust in a friend's basement.
