It may be worthwhile to consider a Dodge/Mercedes/Freightliner Sprinter Van. The drawback is that they have a high roof line, but they do get 20 + mpg in motorhome trim, and 25-30 mpg bare. They are Diesel and the engines are supposed to be good for 400,000 - 500,000 miles.
