The cards are more expensive to manufacture, due to lower volumes but also the higher power they need to pump out (we add an external heat sink because they get too hot for our comfort), and the exotic filtering necessary to get them to work correctly on the very noisy 900Mhz band. The SR9 and XR9 are not compatible becuase ubnt had to change modulation schema to overcome the noise and adjacent-channel interference to which the the SR9's are very susceptible.
