Actually, Mike I like your original idea about circularly polarized antennas for these bands. They are by nature, very broadband, and don't need to be extremely big. At these frequencies, propagation is so much better, that you wouldn't super high gain...and probably wouldn't want it. Besides that, the circ. pol will help filter out a lot of the unwanted noise.
