We do that as well. Essentially you end up with Platypus as the billing/data core with a lot of value add off to the side. If you keep everything loosely coupled upgrades etc aren't a problem.
So far we've always had at least one network and one customer service person that can program so when a efficiency gain can come by writing something they do it.
