Xen has a higher learning curve than Vmware. I'm not sure if any other methods are working their way into current releases. OpenVZ (managed through ProxMox) is a great way to host many resource-lite containers. There's only 2 - 3% overhead and they can really add up low use servers. If you're not using OpenVZ, I'd probably go to VMWare. They have a free version and you can migrate that to the paid version when you're ready.
