Isaac's a good guy, and he's not trying to put you all out of business. His model is essentially a coop, which is not uncommon in rural areas, but in his case it's more urban, sort of a coop for hipsters. ;-) (He would NOT say that; I'm half-joking.)

While that model may or may not work out in most of the US, there are some successful Internet coops. Guifi.net in Catalonia has >20k customers and is growing. It's a mix of fiber and wireless. But pole attachments are a lot easier there than in the US.
