I think you are describing two different problems right? ~~ Intermittent datasource connection? ~~ Crontab won't run at all? Because Crontabs are executed by the Server and not a browser on another machine, the typical problem with Crontabs is that the Server cannot find the address - even if the target is itself. Try executing the Crontab from a browser on the Server. On Windows this is often fixed by entering the target address in the HOSTS file. And just as a guess, when you add your two problems together it almost sounds like a Networking issue - the Server cannot resolve an address or something. Just guessing - hope this helps.
