One thing about open sourced software is commonly they have various
levels of code releases.

Yyou have CVS snapshots / nightly builds etc
These are bleeding edge and might not even work or compile, just the
current version of the code. Should not be used in production.

You have release candidates
This is code that is under review for being released. Should not be
used in production

You have new releases
These are new code versions put out which the devs have decided are
stable. As with any new software, there could be undiscovered bugs as
well as vulnerabilities. If you want to be safe and secure, these
should not be used in production IMO.

You have versions which have been out for a couple months
These are the ones that you want to be using in a production
environment. They are tried and true and the headaches of using
freshly baked software have been endured by other people so that you
dont have to.

If mysql isn't releasing their code straight to the community center
right away I don't think it's due to the fact that they don't value
their community or want to keep anything away from them, I think it's
that they want to make sure the community has the most stable software
they can give them while still putting out new features. Make sense?

Also if i recall the mysql licensing, you only have to pay the makers
of mysql if you ship a software product which CONTAINS mysql.

Working with web applications, your client never gets your binaries
and they never get the binaries of mysql so you can use it free of
charge.

You might want to verify that with the community just to make sure but
I was researching this about a year ago and this is what I found out
and was pretty pleasantly surprised.

I am looking to replace a MS SBS 2003 + Witango which worked great so far
with something else that is reasonably reliable, fast, easy to use and
supported.
This current system worked great, in more then four years it did not break
once (it it true, the load is not very heavy), but I cannot legally use it
anymore. MS does not allow more than 75 users on SBS, no matter how much the
customer is willing to pay. How ridiculous is that?!
So I am looking to alternatives that will make the licensing issue
disappear.
PostgreSQL seems to be basically "no strings attached", which makes it a
first preference.
MySQL has a dual licensing policy, and I am afraid to not get into something
that later on will prove to be another nightmare. Another issue is that the
code changes are not immediately made available to the "Community Server"
(or, at least, CS is not the main focus of the company).

Thanks again.

Subject: Re: Witango-Talk: OT: Witango hosting + DB

I have not used postgreSQL with it, but one thing to consider with wtiango.
I have not found witango to just work perfectly with any DB. Even when other
products seem to. It was one of the main reasons, I changed to mysql, and
then fell in love for many other reasons. I spent months/years chasing down
issues that usually only occur under very heavy load. Under very heavy load,
there are issues of witango hanging and even crashing. Witango 5 was
notorious for this, and 5.5 was much improved, but it still happens. But I
have found it to be almost non-existent with mysql. Probably because witango
tests with mysql, and probably a couple of others.

All that to say, if your stuff is at all intensive, set up some scenarios,
and hammer it on the bench, and see how witango likes it first. I only
tested a few DBs, but I found witango/mysql combo to be about the most
trouble free, and then probably witango/mssql.

Does anybody have any experience in using PostgreSQL + Witango ?
How does it compare with using MySQL?
Would you recommend PostgreSQL ?
[Sorry, I know this is OT but I checked the Witango-Talk archive and could
not find any message related to "PostgreSQL".]

Thank you,

As far as ease of use, we purchased Navicat enterprise, that solved any "MS
is easier" issues. And one more thing, we never chose mysql, especially for
peach, because it was free. Peach, actually told me no before, because it
was free. They just couldn't figure out, how anything free, could be any
good.

Stefan,

Well put. I think that there is enough research out there supporting the
speed and capabilities of both engines to argue forever. Simply put though,
MySQL is in use in enough high-traffic and mission critical enterprise
installations that any blanket statements should be taken with a grain of
salt. Rick - I don't mean to take away from your own research - we all have
to rely in many cases on our own perceptions and experiences. But we should
all try to refrain from making statements that can so easily undermine what
others in the community are doing. I would think that if Robert Garcia were
to weigh in on this he could spell out a very convincing case for MySQL
given the tremendous load his projects put it under on a daily basis. Of
course, I use SQL Server (2000 and 2005) as well as MySQL daily, and the
ease of management and use with SQL Server is amazing, so I tend to lean
towards SQL Server simply because I have it - but were I faced with having
to purchase the licenses myself, I'm not sure I'd feel compelled to do so.

Cheers everyone-

Jason

Hi Rick,

Those arguments are a far cry from "yech". My point was just that Mysql is
a reasonable
database and it's free. It doesn't deserve that kind of negative comment,

casts aspersions on With. Obviously, their site doesn't need a super high
performance
database, so a free one is just fine.

Hi Stefan,

I won't get into a debate, but on Windows in a high-volume production
environment Microsoft SQL server is the fastest hands-down, followed by
Pervasive SQL a close second.

I've never bench-marked MSSQL on Windows vs. MYSQL on Linux, but the
research I have done stated that MSSQL is faster.

Also, I've done lots of work with MYSQL and in an environment where the
traffic is high, MSSQL doesn't perform well. Again, my experience has been
on Windows.

What is "yech" about Mysql? Since version 4 it has been a quite usable
database.

This is a bit off topic. I'm looking for a hosting service for my
personal use. No, not business related. *laughs* If any of you offer site
hosting and Witango app hosting (and perhaps database support as well) would
you please send me some information pertaining to costs? Yes, I did try the
Witango e-mail search looking for Hosting in the message title and received
the following error message:
