Excellent suggestion. That's exactly what I needed to know. Thank you very much. Mike Bravu

Fedora only releases versions of mysql, that are VERY tested. Don't go to mysql.com, and download the latest and greatest, rely on fedora or ubuntu, or whatever to manage that for you. -- Robert Garcia President - BigHead Technology VP Application Development - eventpix.com 13653 West Park Dr Magalia, Ca 95954 ph: 530.645.4040 x222 fax: 530.645.4040 HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED] - HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED] HYPERLINK "http://bighead.net"http://bighead.net/ - HYPERLINK "http://eventpix.com"http://eventpix.com/ On Feb 22, 2007, at 10:43 AM, <HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Alan, Robert, and anybody else that might still respond, thank you very much for your input. I am looking to replace a MS SBS 2003 + Witango which worked great so far with something else that is reasonably reliable, fast, easy to use and supported. This current system worked great, in more then four years it did not break once (it it true, the load is not very heavy), but I cannot legally use it anymore. MS does not allow more than 75 users on SBS, no matter how much the customer is willing to pay. How ridiculous is that?! So I am looking to alternatives that will make the licensing issue disappear. PostgreSQL seems to be basically "no strings attached", which makes it a first preference. MySQL has a dual licensing policy, and I am afraid to not get into something that later on will prove to be another nightmare. Another issue is that the code changes are not immediately made available to the "Community Server" (or, at least, CS is not the main focus of the company). Thanks again. I have not found witango to just work perfectly with any DB. Even when other products seem to. It was one of the main reasons, I changed to mysql, and then fell in love for many other reasons. I spent months/years chasing down issues that usually only occur under very heavy load. Under very heavy load, there are issues of witango hanging and even crashing. Witango 5 was notorious for this, and 5.5 was much improved, but it still happens. But I have found it to be almost non-existent with mysql. Probably because witango tests with mysql, and probably a couple of others. All that to say, if your stuff is at all intensive, set up some scenarios, and hammer it on the bench, and see how witango likes it first. I only tested a few DBs, but I found witango/mysql combo to be about the most trouble free, and then probably witango/mssql. -- Robert Garcia President - BigHead Technology VP Application Development - eventpix.com 13653 West Park Dr Magalia, Ca 95954 ph: 530.645.4040 x222 fax: 530.645.4040 HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED] - HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED] HYPERLINK "http://bighead.net"http://bighead.net/ - HYPERLINK "http://eventpix.com"http://eventpix.com/ On Feb 22, 2007, at 1:15 AM, <HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Does anybody have any experience in using PostgreSQL + Witango ? I think that there is enough research out there supporting the speed and capabilities of both engines to argue forever. Simply put though, MySQL is in use in enough high-traffic and mission critical enterprise installations that any blanket statements should be taken with a grain of salt. Rick - I don't mean to take away from your own research - we all have to rely in many cases on our own perceptions and experiences. But we should all try to refrain from making statements that can so easily undermine what others in the community are doing. I would think that if Robert Garcia were to weigh in on this he could spell out a very convincing case for MySQL given the tremendous load his projects put it under on a daily basis. Of course, I use SQL Server (2000 and 2005) as well as MySQL daily, and the ease of management and use with SQL Server is amazing, so I tend to lean towards SQL Server simply because I have it - but were I faced with having to purchase the licenses myself, I'm not sure I'd feel compelled to do so. My point was just that Mysql is a reasonable database and it's free. It doesn't deserve that kind of negative comment, which indirectly casts aspersions on With. Obviously, their site doesn't need a super high performance database, so a free one is just fine. I’ve never bench-marked MSSQL on Windows vs. MYSQL on Linux, but the research I have done stated that MSSQL is faster. Also, I’ve done lots of work with MYSQL and in an environment where the traffic is high, MSSQL doesn’t perform well. Again, my experience has been on Windows. <6b2db6b.jpg> Rick Sanders President 902-401-7689 HYPERLINK "http://www.webenergy-sw.com"www.webenergy-sw.com Shop online for computer systems, accessories, and much, much more!
