All true. I completely understand that UTF-8 is a necessary step. I can’t say exactly when Witango will make it, though. There is a lot of work to be done first.
When I do, I will work to support backwards compatibility as much as possible, and perhaps even support character sets at the System and TAF levels. I will also take a look at the ODBC/JDBC functions and the string Meta Tags to see if I can get pass-through support for UTF-8 without affecting how Witango internally works (ie. TAFs and TCFs use the 8859-1 character set) Robert From: Robert Garcia [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, December 01, 2010 4:05 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Witango-Talk: Witango 6 for Windows released I remember when realbasic had to deal with this, it was a major issue to transition. I think one of the things that really helped is to declare a default encoding for all text, and then be able to declare encoding for specific string objects. So to be backwards compatible, you could set the system to be default of ISO-8859-1, but then create strings when needed as UTF-8, and even set results as UTF-8, or any other encoding. It is definitely going to be a very difficult transition, I suspect, but needed. I understand the decision to stay backwards compatible at this point, but it is a major drawback. -- Robert Garcia President - BigHead Technology VP Application Development - eventpix.com 15520 Coutelenc Rd Magalia, Ca 95954 ph: 530.645.4040 x222 fax: 530.645.4040 [email protected] - [email protected] http://bighead.net/ - http://eventpix.com/ On Dec 1, 2010, at 12:54 PM, Robert Shubert wrote: Mikal, UTF-8 is preferred when supporting multiple languages, and Witango will transition to it as soon as possible. This change will, however, not be backwards compatible with previous versions of Witango. We feel at this time that it is very important to support full backwards compatibility. I will introduce some helpful Meta Tags and utilities to assist in the short-term. I am also planning to build multi-lingual versions of the Witango platform in the future. In the meantime, Witango 6 will operate exactly like Witango 5.5 in this respect. So whatever limitations and/or workarounds you may have, will remain. But one of my devs do maintain them. I will have to review some of our code. One thing that comes to mind, is text encoding. This was a mess before, and we had to do many workarounds dealing with text encoding.
