If you see a huge jump from odbc to jdbc, that is probably more due to the 
driver and the database. Some db vendors have a more robust jdbc driver and 
support. If odbc is setup correctly, and both drivers are equally maintained, 
odbc should have a slight edge on windows. On the mac, jdbc will probably give 
you better performance, due to poor odbc support.
