I have seen that option before and obviously didn't read it properly as I
assumed it meant heat generated the guid (but that is the -gg option). That
will save me some work.

May be heat needs some documentation :-)

Uhh, heat already supports that with the -ag switch.

2. I would suggest that the most reliable solution would be to have a solution
that set the component guid to "*". This isn't very well documented but I
believe it sets the guid to an MD5 hash of the folder name and component name
(see here:
http://installing.blogspot.com/2006/09/automatically-generating-componen
t.html)

I am working on something like this at the moment, if I get it working I'll
post details.

Can you elaborate on which of the component rules #2 presents problem for? I
wrote a tool to auto-gen my components from my web structure as well. It puts
every file in its own component with a new Guid for the id. Is this approach
problematic? Is it different than what Visual Studio Installer does?

1. It would be fantastic if someone wrote the extension that made it easy to
author VS packages or wrote a harvester so heat could generate much of it
automatically. At the very least, you could open a Feature Request.

2. This is a particular challenge with the Windows Installer due to the
Component Rules. If you have a solution for including large number of files
that does not violate the Component Rules that'd be a great thing to add to the
WiX toolset.

3. Documentation always needs lots of work. <smile/> Are you offering to
help improve it? Many people make this suggestion, no one steps up to help.
The active volunteers on the WiX toolset are all busy fixing bugs.
