Both in Debian and Ubuntu, but also in Fedora, any such messages are
usually logged into each user's $HOME/.xsession-errors file.
So there is really no need to reinvent the wheel. ;)

If I remember, when you launch X form console (startx) the errors are
showed on this console. But If your are using xdm, gdm, kdm,... the logs
cannot be written to the console, because it don't exists. Then, the los
are written to the .xsession-errors.
For these reasons, we don't need save the warnings in other files.
If I am writing a patch for windowmaker, and I am sending info to the
console (debug info with printfs in the code), then I write the .xinitrc
file and add the line "xterm". Then, I launch X-Window with startx and a
console appears. Then, in the console, type wmaker and I can see the
output without changing to the text console. I can kill wmaker with
Control+C,...
