I think there should be a way to split a column, so that one half
contains the original column and the other half is an empty column. You
should then be able to open new clients in the empty column or move
clients into it, like normal.
This would mean on multi-monitor setups you could start with a column in
each monitor, and by splitting columns clients would never span
monitors. It would also let you make space to put floating clients, so a
resizable managed area wouldn't be necessary.
