I've finally done it with pyton + dbus + purple, shamelessly copying a script I've found on the web. My script produces a file with a list of connected buddies which changes under connection/disconnection events, and then in wmiirc I read the file each time the status bar is updated. But perhaps your script is wiser, since it puts things directly on wmii file system. However, I can't access it. I think the smart ass people running my ISP don't like strange ports.
