[wmii] UTF-8 text issue in wmii-3.6

Hello.
After upgrading from wmii-20070516 to wmii-3.6 parts of text in window
titles and status bar are rendered ugly. It seems that cyrillic
characters are drawn using font other than $WMII_FONT.
I've tried:
WMII_FONT='-*-fixed-medium-r-*-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1'
WMII_FONT='-*-fixed-medium-r-*-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-*-*'
WMII_FONT='-*-*-medium-r-*-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-*-*'
with no success, however wmii-snap-20070516, dmenu as well as xfontsel
render utf-8 text fine by that font (-misc-fixed-...).
Locale is ru_RU.UTF-8.
