Try installing the "xfstt" (X Font Server for TrueType fonts) package and using a TrueType font:
'-*-bitstream vera sans mono-medium-r-*-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*' This has always worked for me on Ubuntu GNU/Linux.
