Because of the extra features offered by gaim, such as filetransfers.

Ugh, file transfers are no excuse to use Gaim. Especially for those of us behind NAT, where they don't work. SCP's not much better (although you can forward that port). Good (err, bad) old FTP's much better when you don't need the encryption.
