And Morningstar and Fitch ratings are saying things like McClatchy stock is "worthless" and that they expect it to go under by 2010. http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content _id=1003918781 http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content _id=1003891512
The idea of not having a local newspaper is scary. The local media is a mess. Peak Broadcasting, owner of KMJ-AM, the only radio station in town with any type of real news department, has cut jobs and hours of news coverage. Westwood One has closed the Fresno Metro News ad Metro Traffic bureau. KMPH-TV 26 (Pappas-Fox) has cut news budget and is in Chapter 7, with auction bids to be opened today. They are also auctioning off KFRE-TV 59 (Pappas- CW). KSEE-TV (Granite-NBC) has been in Chapter 11 for two years and cut news staff by huge amounts including a number of anchors. KGPE-TV 47 (High Plains - CBS) has traded twice since Clear Channel owned it and made major staff and news cuts. KFSN-TV (Disney/ABC - ABC) is the only English language station not making major news cuts and the only station that can field multiple news crews at any one time. I really don't have a handle on KFTV 21 (Univision-Univision) on what they've done with their news budget/ At what point does local news coverage disappear entirely? Rych Withers Fresno. "but we've got great coverage of what happened to Brittany's panties...after this...." -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 9:49 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MEDIADEADPOOL] Bad time to be a Cubs fan Sigh. My mom keeps nagging me to apply for a job at the Bakersfield paper to get me back "home." It's a bitch watching the institution you wanted to be a part of, that supposedly was critical to basic democracy -- the "fourth estate" -- and spent EIGHT YEARS OF COLLEGE, DOWN THE DRAIN! -- uh, go down the drain. I have a reporter friend at the Rocky Mountain News who asked if I'd ever seen an entire profession go away before my eyes. I'm lucky, I guess, doing the last thing I ever envisioned myself doing. It felt like a last resort when I took this job. But go figure, for the moment my job is secure. But even now, we're being pushed toward being more "bloggy" and less "newsy." We'll see, I guess, if the adage about live entertainment being recession-proof holds up. --Deb --- On Wed, 12/10/08, Richard de Give <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > From: Richard de Give <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: [MEDIADEADPOOL] Bad time to be a Cubs fan > To: [email protected] > Date: Wednesday, December 10, 2008, 8:57 PM Just had a round of > cutbacks in Bakersfield, too.
