Hi everyone,
JISC (UK university funding agency) are organising a one day "Widgets
Barcamp" in October for developers to create new W3C Widgets. Apache
Wookie will feature heavily as the platform used at the event, and
I'll be going along as a facilitator/speaker. It's currently pencilled
in for 12th October in London; I'll put up more details when they're
confirmed.
Here's the question for mentors - one of the organisers has asked me
whether it would be appropriate to jointly badge the event as an
"JISC/Apache Wookie" barcamp. How would this sit with the use of the
Apache brand?
The use of the Apache brand for an incubating project is a very delicate
subject, as it's not yet a real Apache project, and may never be if the
incubation fails. Also, remember that a project proposal includes a
section about "excessive fascination with the Apache brand", as we've
seen contributors to incubating projects abusing it.
So until graduation, every public mention of an incubating project must
clearly indicate its status by using something like "Incubating Apache
Wookie" as its name. And even so, naming the event "JISC/Incubating
Apache Wookie barcamp" seems to me like showing the Apache brand too
much so early in the project (even in october).
Now Wookie as a project and as a name has existed before incubation at
Apache, and there's absolutely no problem with naming the event
"JISC/Wookie barcamp" and mentioning clear and loud during the event
that Wookie is in the process of becoming an Apache project.
What do other mentors think?
