I'm not sure it's the right way to fix the code.
There could be a real portability problem. It is referenced as a NON GCC bugs
meaning that the code is potentially buggy.
See http://gcc.gnu.org/bugs.html#nonbugs_c section "Casting does not work as
expected when optimization is turned on".
"To disable optimizations based on alias-analysis for faulty legacy code, the
option -fno-strict-aliasing can be used as a work-around."
