Actually I have already started doing something like this for the next version of translate.wordpress.com and we have some SoC code (Google svn seems down) on the topic, so together we can really do something that suits our needs. Give me a couple of days to open up the current code, so that we have a base to build on. Stay tuned :-) Nikolay.
