finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much, Pete. This is exactly what I wanted to know. :)
Although, when I'm trying to log on as user (that i created for that ftp site) using IP only, it says "connection failed". Maybe my ISP has to do with this not connecting?
but thank you, you answered my question.

A hostname is not required, just an IP address.  The hostname just makes it easier for people to remember how to connect to your host by translating the IP address to a name.  WS_FTP server will work either way.  If you are hosting DNS yourself for your domain on a server that you control, then you can update your DNS record and assign it in DNS.  If someone else hosts your domain then you need to contact their DNS administor and ask them to create the entry for you.

ok, i guess, i can't state the question correctly
of course i need internet connection (T1), i have static connection, so my ip will always be the same. I HAVE THAT!!!!!!!
my question was: if my ISP doesn't allow ftp server, and if i will have a domain that someone will be managing, do i need to get that domain's name as my host name. It says that I need to have a valid host name, meaning -- whatever.domain.com
isn't that correct? SO IF THAT'S THE CASE, DO I NOTIFY SOMEONE?
or listing my macine's IP is enough?
ANYONE JUST TELL ME HOW YOU START UP FTP SERVER FROM THE BEGINNING.
thank you,
Alyssa

There is no other option per se. You need an ISP to get you the internet connection and static IP. Now, you have choices in terms of who to use. For example, if DSL is available at your location, you can get a DSL line with a static IP address. It'll probably be a business DSL line but it would work. Then tell everyone you wish to have access what that IP address is, setup a username and password, and basically that's it.

The point is that you will need some sort of connection that allows you to have a static IP and relatively high speed access, IMO. Perhaps someone here can recommend an ISP that might fit the bill at a price that's right for you. Anyone?

Thanks, Randy, that makes sense.
if going with ISP is not an option, what's the other way?
also, assuming there is a domain, do I just make up a host name with that domain name and list my machine IP address? Do I need to notify anybody of that, or get some kind of permission?
Someone here mentioned earlier that i just need to list my IP, what about valid host name?
Thanks a lot,
Alyssa

You don't need a domain per se, because it is valid to FTP to an IP address. But you will need a few things:

1. fixed IP address (may require a different service level) so that your users can be given an address

2. agreement with ISP that includes passing FTP traffic (lots of basic ISP agreements don't allow servers to run at the customer side)

I would suggest contacting ISP and explaining exactly what you intend to do.

Just exactly how do you think you are going to use FTP without some type of network connectivity?

Subject: [SPAM] [WS_FTP Forum] Setting up WSFTP Server

Hi all,

I'm not an expert, so if my question is not clear or stupid, I appologize in advance.

I need to set up an FTP server on XP machine, there is no network. This is for the small purpose to have few people be able to download/upload files. My question: what is my host? How do I set that part? Do i have to have a domain? and if I do, who is to add my host name to the domain? and which IP address will I need in that case? and if I go through ISP, do I have to notify them so that they add my host?

I appreciate any replies very much.

Alyssa
