Mmmm.. not fanatically, but, well, there is a place for everything. I took over a site a fortnight ago, and, the code, oh my - one page weighed in at 250K. i trimmed it to 150K simply by removing spaces. Now that was ridiculous. (and the owner worried that he didnt seem to be getting traffic - noooo, Google wouldnt be indexing you, would it... :( ) To get this back on topic, whether or not you take out the spaces, will not affect your validation, but balancing load with layout is important - look at the Google home page. With the traffic they have, they have rightly cut down on every character they can. But on a typical low-traffic page? Probably not worth it. And it should always be done automatically (ala StyleMaster sweeps), by hand will probably waste more man time than it saves in machine time.
