If I use images and make them <a>s, redundantly linking them to their current page, I could deliver text to google from within the alt tag? And Google will give it as much weight as the main content text of the site?

Sadly, no - its vaguely possible that you might be able to make it
appear with CSS (never seen it dont, though) but Google still wouldn't
see it.
But if the image is a link then G will see and index your text :)
