I think it's a good practice, as long as the button actually says "to the top" or "back to the top", I think these work (at least for me) but there are a lot of buttons that have just an arrow pointing up on them and I think that most internet users don't just understand the purpose of this button. Whoah, that's some twisted english here, hope you get what I mean.
