Hi Edson
Thanks for your answer. Yes I have already considered and even tested other
digimodes (I am into digimodes for years and do nearly nothing else in ham
radio, hi hi). I agree with you in that Olivia is by far the strongest and most
reliable *ragchew mode* available today working with relatively weak signals.
Therefore Olivia is my favourite digimode for most applications. Nevertheless
when it comes to *really* weak signals, longest distances or low power
equipnent/low performance antennas it lies behind JT65 by magnitudes. I have
tested both modes with just a few minutes difference in time last week between
HB and ZL and JT65 worked with 100% decoding while Oliva decoded only a
fragment of text from time to time resulting in unreadable information. The
station in ZL (a colleague of mine) engaged a simple 5 meter wire (14 MHz) held
up by a fishing rod and a KX3 running on internal batteries outdoors near
Auckland. We used the protocol mentioned for message transmission (every
fragment confirmed by an RRR with repetition if the RRR could not be received
back). Perfect copy down to 100 mW of power with just a few repetitions. I
guess we won’t be able find another mode (except QRSS which is somewhat
uncomfortable) performing this way down to S/N of -23 dB or less. So (at least
to me) it seems worth some effort to realize something like an “SMS-Sender” for
hams with an underlying JT65 transport layer even if the transmission of such
an “SMS” takes half an hour (I can lean back and eat a donut while transmission
is in progress J)… And going there (to ZL) would take a lot more of time and
money J.

Hello Peter,
It is, in theory, possible to use the JT65 or JT9 engine in WSJT-X with a
different GUI or application. However, for the application you describe, I am
not sure JT65 or JT9 would be a good mode for adding some sort of ARQ protocol
due to the limitations of the message length. Have you considered Olivia, Thor,
or other keyboard weak signal modes? My experience with them is that they are
extremely sensitive and will perform very well in weak signal links.

Thanks Chuck and Waldek. I guess you did misunderstand me. The idea is not to
simply remote control the GUI. Of course this could be done using VNC or
similar software which exists on every platform. The idea is to use the
existing functionality of the program WSJT-X to *automate* some higher level
functions built around the bare single message transport mechanism of WSJT-X.
If you have to copy a clear text message - say, 160 characters, the size of an
SMS - you have to *manually* fragment the message into pieces of 13 character
each and transmit them one by one. The fragmentation could easily be done by a
software built around WSJT-X. Additionally every fragment could be confirmed
and repeated if necessary by this software. But to implement it a suitable
interface within WSJT-X is missing today… The most simple way to realize it
might be using a sockets server component within WSJT-X.
Background: last week a colleague of mine was /p in ZL and we could establish a
daily communication between HB and ZL (18’800 kms) at power levels of 100 mW in
JT65A (no, it’s not a typo, the setting was really 100 mW). Both stations
wished to have a software to make the exchange of longer texts a bit more
comfortable… ;-)

If you run wsjtx on Linux you can remote control it with VNC.
The VNC server runs on Linux. VNC clients are available for
Windows and Linux.

Hello All
Just to think aloud: would it be a huge effort to implement a kind of simple
remote controlling interface for WSJT-X for example by means of a socket
connection ? I imagine a kind of mechanism to issue commands remotely from a
third party software like setting the audio frequencies for RX and TX,
enabling/disabling transmission, setting the message contents, et cetera and
also to receive the contents of decoded messages along with frequency
information by that third party software. If something like this would exist
WSJT-X could serve as a virtual TNC and it would be possible to build higher
level low speed communication applications (i. e. ARQ transmission of free text
messages longer than 13 characters with automatic fragmentation and
defragmentation) using WSJT as a reusable software unit and without the
necessity to reinvent the wheel…
I am a (not yet retired) software engineer and for the moment I cannot afford
the time to familiarize myself with the development system used by WSJT. WSJT-X
as a virtual TNC would allow to engage an already known development system for
the implementation of a higher level application like the one mentioned above
;-)…
Any statements are welcome.
