More recently, Steve (K9AN) and I developed an open-source Reed Solomon

Steve and I have written a paper on the "Franke-Taylor" soft-decision
decoder. It will appear next month in the ARRL journal QEX. A
"preprint" has been posted at the following link:

Hi Joe,

thanks for your answer and for the pointer to the code.
Apparently your soft decoder is meant for a GF(2^6) field.
How difficult would it be to modify it for a GF(2^8), i.e. for  a
decoder able to deal with the entire ASCII alphabet ?

Thanks,
