Hi Rich,

these are the actual grids embedded in the contest mode exchanges. The contest mode as is has been hacked into the existing protocol by using a trick of antipodal grids to indicate contest mode grid reports. We realize that this is less than satisfactory but there is insufficient wriggle room in the existing 72-bt codeword to do anything better. This does mean that attempts to QSO between those using NA contest mode and others not is not going to make sense. For the same reasons we cannot easily detect that a contest mode report is being received unless you are already in contest mode, the converse is ok because we can assume you will not work someone on the other side of the planet in NA only contest.

F8 adds three extra bits (75-bit payload) and that will probably allow us to design something much more robust for some contests but we are not there yet. This doesn't directly help with MSK144 which is another good choice for contests so we may have to break the MSK144 protocol at some point if the same 75-bit payload and extra protocol messages is to be used there, not something we would do lightly.

So not much help to you although you can translate those grid squares back to what was typed in by adding 180 degrees modulo 360 to their lat and long.
