When we look to the ADIF specification, we see no information about the
possible contents of the RST_RCVD and RST_SENT fields. However, we note
that these fields are defined as string fields. If we are pedantic and
if we refer to the name of the fields, RST is nothing else as the old
report system in use in amateur radio. R goes from 1 to 5 and S and T go
from 1 to 9. It is not necessary to define such fields as string,
numerical would be sufficient, although no arithmetical operations are
meaningful on such data. A RST report is not a number, but the
concatenation of 3 numbers. Some pieces of software and some reporting
systems accept only reports according to this very old definition. Some
other accept nearly any string in these fields, e.g. "599++", "59+40",
"-12", "+5", "599X" and many others.

Best wishes,
Claude (DJ0OT)
