Hi Jim

Consider what would happen, if all stations would use dT mean or median for
offset. Each time you station will set local offset based on dT and use it at
transmissions. So you transmitted time will be slightly different than UTC
time, not much but different. Other stations decoding you will use that time as
a part of the mean or median calculation and will have another time difference
to UTC. The result will be a random walk that may or more probably will result
an accumulated time difference. That means at least an additional search is
needed for current mean or median time difference each time you power on your
computer and WSJTX. If there is only weak stations potentially decodeable on
band and your computer time is off more than say 3 s, then it may take a long
time before you can decode any signal.
In addition each band over globe will drift to different dT mean values during
no or bad propagation. The end result will be that local (within propagation)
station will have a different timebase than DX stations and mean dT will mean
that no DX will be decoded due to time difference. Of course your WSJT could
then have different mean dT for different continents and that will be told in
all spots… Nice chaos.
