Ah so. Have you seen "Radar Principles" by Nadav Levanon (1988)? It's a gold mine of information about designing sync sequences, since that's what radar is all about. Talks a lot about FM chirping which seems to be undergoing a renaissance. I understand it to be used in LoRa. And I hear a lot of chirped ocean state radars on HF these days. It would be interesting to have a HF propagation sounder that can resolve ionospheric multipath components. Might be difficult to do with a bandwidth tolerable in the HF ham bands, though.
