CAT can be related to audio -- front/back connectors matter for example.

CAT is not related to Audio.

Please debug the audio matter. My suggestion, at first:

aplay -l
aplay -L
arecord -l
arecord -L
pactl list

Please examine the output.

As mentioned previously, if the "sound card" is connected via USB, 
verify that gpsd (or another program) doesn't grasp the "sound card". 
The output of dmesg can help.
