Perfect!

That seems to be the issue. Set power down to 5W with no issues at all. Back
up to 50W or above, and problems again. Ordered some ferrites and should be
good to go! Didn’t even think of this as I have been very careful about
grounding everything. Both the radio and tuner are grounded. Proves that RF
can leak in even in a grounded system.

Jason,

This sounds like a textbook example of RFI getting into your computer or USB
cable. I had a similar issue on 80m and found that a few well-placed ferrites
on my USB cable fixed the issue.

Search for "FT8 RFI" for other folks advice.

To verify, try transmitting into a dummy load or at _very_ low power. If it
doesn't happen, you've proven it's due to RFI.

When tuned to 40m (and only 40m), using FT8, the software loses CAT control
shortly after transmitting. The symptoms are that it will hold the transmit
too long and eventually show ORANGE status in WSJTX. It will reset and
reconnect, but not after losing the QSO due to timing issues. This occurs each
and every time I transmit on 40m, including when using TUNE. I want to
emphasize that it seems to ONLY occur on 40m and not any other band. I use
other software that also has CAT control over the 991A and it works as designed.

I have also changed the mode to FT4 and 40m behaves normally. It seems
isolated to only when using FT8 and 40m.

Please let me know if you need any additional details.
