You can sometimes get friends who need volunteer hours for their major to help course marshal for the races. Tell them its easier than dealing with smelly homeless people or changing geriatric diapers. This is how I recruited Justin.
Mountain only guys -- drive the wheel car, and make fun of the roadie who gets a flat (by the way he must've been 5' nothin and a 100 and nothin) - can't work a front skewer - and after 10 seconds yells "HELP ME!!". Jared and Tyler can film it and put it on youtube. I wish I did. It's important for everyone on the team to help out whenever you can. Generally, if you are almost always there to help the team, the more acceptable it becomes to miss an event when you really do need to study. If you do nothing for the team, you are a drain on the team. You can also argue that not everyone has the luxury to pay "40-90K in school dues" to sit in their dorm rooms and play video games all week. No one is studying so much that they can't spare a few hours once a semester. Besides studies show retention of knowledge and creativity are more likely to come in a relaxed state than locked in a room studying (thank you NPR). As well as volunteering on a job resume appeals to potential employers by showing that you are willing to do work that has no direct benefit (i.e. paycheck) and that as a candidate you have the ability to balance work with your personal life. And if you need MORE incentives - the top volunteers as chosen by El Presidente Lataaaaah - will WIN A FREE GUIDED WEEKEND MOUNTAIN BIKING TRIP IN MOAB, UTAH! (airfare and/or travel expenses not included).
