The only remote X11 access I ever do (ascending and descending) is to/from trusted hosts on a LAN, where a priori it's safe enough to do `xhost +` and forego ssh tunnelling in order to get the best bandwidth. Now that you mention it: I don't even have a .X11-unix directory , is that the reason I have to do the xhost dance to be able to make remote connections, also on the Linux machine I often display on?
