So, some time after the last message (I saved) in this exchange I got my X11.app to work again. If I reported on how/why, I didn't keep a copy, and of course I have already forgotten.
So I freaked out a little when X11.app again failed to start after upgrading my port:xorg-libxcb to 1.17 . It just hang and had to be force-quit. Fortunately there was the idea to run the startx script with -x (`#!/bin/sh -x` in the first line). That showed the culprint: /opt/local/bin/openssl was missing (because I had deactivated port:openssl because of a build conflict ). Hah!
