This is a list of packages that were upgraded. I wonder if there was a change
in libc that is causing the problem?

I wasn't specific enough, it is 16.04.1. I've installed on a test computer as
well and the problem replicates. This problem didn't happen until I did an
apt-get dist-upgrade today.

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial

I am using 16.04.1 LTS and do not have this problem. If you are just on
16.04 and not 16.04.1, I would suggest upgrading. I had a lot of problems with
16.04 as well. I think it was released a little ahead of being ready for
primetime.
