normalize-space does not properly handle text data

Figured out why you're having trouble and I'm not -- somehow, you're using an
unreasonably small chunk size. Mine's 1024 characters; yours is apparently down
somewhere around 32 -- I suspect you're running an older version of either
FastStringBuffer or the DTM code than I am, since I think this was increased
some time back when we concluded that shared DTMs made the smaller chunks
wasteful. We should probably bring you up to date...

But the smaller size meant normalization issues arose at a different point in
the process, which is why we were getting different results. With a testcase
tailored for the code as it's running on my system -- and as it _SHOULD_ be
checked in (!?!) - I can reproduce the problem; see attachment.
