... On the other hand, I don't see any way to keep the old version of 
Xalan from "intruding on" attempts to compile a new one other than (a) 
removing it from the classpath (hard to do when it's bundled into another 
jarfile) or (b) using separate package names.

I'd rather be able to do (a) cleanly. But...
